When I hear the two words 'Vegan' and 'Wedding' in the same sentence my ears prick up and I get just a tad excited! So when I found out about this Wedding Fair hosted by The Fat Carrot, I knew I needed to find out more and let all you guys know the details too. The event is being held in Cranbrook, Kent so if you do live close enough please do take a visit and support this wonderful event, discover wonderful suppliers as well as enjoying vegan snacks. The dream would be that we hear of lots of these events that specialise in vegan and eco friendly offerings, scattered all over the country, but we must start somewhere and I believe this may just be the first official vegan wedding fair. I'm definitely celebrating!
I got in touch with Jane from The Fat Carrot to get all the details.
Thank you for agreeing to chat. Can you tell us a bit about what led you to set up your first vegan and eco wedding fair?
There seems to be a gap in the wedding market for more eco-friendly and vegan weddings. Lots of people understand there is a lot of waste in weddings and many people are vegan for the animals and the planet.
What can we expect from attending the fair?
Up to 18 stalls of wedding inspiration including vegan catering and cakes, eco florists, vegan friendly hats, hair and makeup. Plus wooden rings and goblets. See Facebook South East Vegan Events for updates and supplier bios.
Do you think brides and grooms need to compromise when choosing a vegan and eco-friendly wedding?
There are many more options available to brides and grooms meaning they can choose to be more eco conscious and serve delicious fully vegan menus.
Any other details about the fair that would be useful for us to all know in advance?
There are stairs at the main entrance – to avoid these use the sloping path to the back door. Free parking nearby.
What do you love most about weddings?
What advice would you give to newly engaged couples just starting to plan their wedding day?
Make a list of what important to you and a budget plan.
You are also a veggie/vegan specialist caterer, can you tell us a bit about your company?
I founded The Fat Carrot in 2011 after struggling to find tasty meat free meals. I stopped eating meat at the age of 14 after a school discussion on blood sports and never looked back. I am from a family of home cooks who love to feed people. Both my late mother and grandmother would never have anyone go hungry! I gained experience working eight years at an independent country pub in the beautiful Kent countryside. I continued to experiment at home and my mother dubbed me the veggie Heston Blumenthal and The Fat Carrot was born.
I met my husband a long term vegetarian turned vegan in 2015 and his influence pushed the vegan side of the business into new territories. In 2017 we held our first vegan fair and have plans to continue to grow our vegan options.
The Fat Carrot is insured for events and we have a 5 (top) hygiene rating.
What would you advise brides and grooms to discuss with their caterers before the wedding day?
We have a list that we take couples through. It is also good to meet in person and for the caterer to ideally see the venue and facilities.
Is there any other advice you can give to the couple for their big day?
Make sure your caterer and other suppliers on the day have a contact or two in the wedding party so if there are questions or problems they can deal with it. Leaving the big day for you to relax and enjoy!
Anything else you want to add that we haven’t asked about?
We add the option to donate any food waste to a local animal sanctuary.
Thank you so much Jane! I really hope this event is the start of more vegan wedding events to come. We know the demand is there, so it's bound to be a wonderful success. Get in touch if you were able to attend, we would love to hear the reviews!
