After attending a recent Vevolution event, I discovered EM-J; makeup artist to the stars. She is an inspiration to the beauty industry, as she continually proves that despite using 100% vegan cosmetics, her work is of the same high calibre of any top makeup artists who continue to use products containing animal derived ingredients.
As someone who is a big makeup fan, I am so grateful to have met her and share her wisdom with you all! I really hope you enjoy reading :)
Thank you so much for taking the time to chat! Tell us a bit about your vegan journey and how you transitioned to become a vegan makeup artist.
I finally took the leap to eat vegan about two years ago. When most of us go vegan-of course it’s natural to start questioning everything! Our eyes are open to animal cruelty in a way like it never was before. I was horrified to find out that even though I stopped eating animals-that in actual fact i was still putting them directly on my face. I started researching ingredients and found that 60 % of my kit included animal ingredients, despite most of it being cruelty free. There was only one thing for it- I went cold turkey!
Your portfolio is very impressive, when did your career as a makeup artist start out?
Thank you! I began when i was 18 and studied for 2 years, So i have been working as a freelance artist for 10 years now.
What would you say about the general quality of vegan makeup right now? Is there room for improvement?
SO EXCITING!! The world of vegan make-up is quickly expanding and developing. There are countless products which work just as well as non-vegan products and I have seen a dramatic difference even in the past 6 months of this.
Your online lists of vegan makeup products are super handy, what are the key ingredients we should be looking out for when choosing vegan makeup?
That’s so good to hear-i am glad you have found them useful. The most common i would say to watch out for are- Carmine, Geletin, Keratin, Cera Alba (bees wax), Civit, Collagen, Guanine, Magnesium stearate and Lanolin.
What advice would you give to brides wanting to improve their skin in the run up to the big day?
Try and give yourself a weekly pamper on the lead up to your wedding. I am obsessed with The Beauty Kitchen. Exfoliate using ‘Waterless Complexion Savior’, pop an overnight mask on like ‘Seahorse Plankton Night Mask’ and massage your face daily using a great face oil like ‘Berry British’ to really get blood circulating around your face. The night before your wedding I’d recommend a special treat of the Charlotte Tilbury Clay mask which will nourish your skin beyond belief and you will wake up glowing ready to walk down the aisle!
What are the 2018 most popular bridal makeup looks and what do you think we will be seeing more of in 2019?
Everything is super natural right now! It’s all about gorgeous glowing skin and radiating your natural beauty. I would like to think that this will roll over to next year because what a confidence boost knowing you look 100% like you but just a more gorgeous version on your wedding day. I love each face for it’s uniqueness and we should be celebrating that!
What are your favourite vegan makeup products that you think everyone should get hold of?
WOW what a huge question. There are so many out there to list now, please head to my blog www.emj-makeup.com where you will find my Youtube channel and also my Instagram @emj_mua where I share my faves all the time!
Can you tell us a little more about the products you sell?
Yes sure! We create vegan leather products in the UK originally for professional make-up artists to keep their brushes and kit. However we have also created a range of products for non-professionals including beautiful make-up bags, make-up brushes, laptop bags and tote bags. You can see them all at EMJ Company.
Finally, what advice would you give to the wedding party getting ready the morning of the big day?
First of all i would always recommend if possible having a wedding that starts after midday. Getting a full bridal party ready, and out the door is often stressful if they need to be at the church for 11am and it also means a very early start for the bride and bridesmaids. Arrange a make-up artist and hairstylist who you get a good vibe from as well as them being a good artist. It is important to surround yourself with relaxing people that you can be yourself around. Prepare as much as you can before; hand- nails, tan and lashes. Light some candles, Have some chill music and a glass of Prosecco in your hand.
Thank you so much EM-J! I will leave readers with some images of her incredible work, and if you are looking for someone who you can trust to do perfect makeup for your wedding day get in touch via emailing Jessica@btstalent.com But be quick, as she is highly sought after!
